Texas Gun Sense seeks a Fall 2024 Policy Intern to assist our team in preparing for the 89th Texas Legislative Session. This is a dynamic hybrid learning opportunity for a student interested in policy, research, and advocacy. This is an unpaid, part-time position that can serve as hours needed to complete graduation requirements. 

About Texas Gun Sense

Founded in the wake of the Sandy Hook School shooting, the mission of Texas Gun Sense is to prevent gun violence and other gun tragedies in Texas through education, partnerships, and policy change. We are a 501(c)3 organization that has acted as the leading state-based gun violence prevention organization by bringing coalition partners together, shaping the narrative in the media, playing defense against the passage of dangerous gun laws, and advocating for common sense gun policies that save lives. We have been a significant driver in promoting safe gun storage education in Texas. 

Primary responsibilities:

  • Researching and documenting data to support key policies
  • Assisting in preparing materials for the 89th Legislative Session
  • Helping to plan policy briefings, events and volunteer trainings
  • Working with partners and participating in coalition meetings 

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in UT’s LBJ School or a related school with a demonstrated interest in policy
  • Based in Austin/Central Texas
  • Strong written, organizational, and communication skills
  • A passion for our mission to end gun violence
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
