Statement from Texas Gun Sense on Supreme Court Decision Overturning the Fifth Circuit’s Ruling in Rahimi

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Fifth Circuit’s ruling in Rahimi preserves federal protections for domestic violence victims, sending the message that victims and survivors deserve to live without fear of harm from gun violence. This historic moment could not have happened without the persistence and bravery of survivors and advocates across the country.

The Rahimi case originated in Texas. According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, firearms account for more than 70% of intimate partner homicides in the state, and over the last decade, the number of women killed by an intimate partner has nearly doubled.

“As someone who has experienced the trauma of being shot and injured by a partner, I am hopeful to see the Supreme Court prioritize the safety and security of domestic violence victims across this country,” stated advocate and domestic violence survivor Carolyn Thomas. “While today signifies progress, I will continue to share my story to let other victims know they are not alone and to help put an end to intimate partner violence.”

Nicole Golden, Texas Gun Sense Executive Director, said, “Today, we celebrate this victory in honor of all individuals impacted by family violence. The ruling to overturn Rahimi is a testament to the courage and advocacy of survivors, and we stand with them.”

Texas Gun Sense remains committed to advancing common sense policies that protect women and families from gun violence and defending against efforts to chip away at these protections.
