This weekend, the entire country watched in horror as political violence erupted at a campaign rally. It is unacceptable that easy access to firearms has put our citizens in danger in the places where they deserve to feel safe. This abhorrent act was perpetrated against one of the most protected individuals in the world, as he was surrounded by highly trained security. One thing this horrific incident makes clear: more guns do not make us safer. 

I grieve for the father who died protecting his family, and the two other people who were critically injured. 

This is another very strong message that we need better gun laws to protect our lives and institutions.
