Dear [Title of School Official]:
We can all agree that creating a safe environment at school for students and teachers is a top priority, and I thank you for everything you’re doing to achieve that goal.
Given the frequency of actual and threatened school shootings, more needs to be done to keep students and staff safe, including educating adults about the dangers of leaving guns accessible to youth.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, three-quarters of the firearms used in school shootings were obtained from the home of a parent or close relative. Additionally, nearly 5 million children live in homes with an unlocked, loaded firearm.
We know that securely storing firearms can prevent unintentional shootings, suicides, and school shootings like the 2018 attack at Sante Fe High School in Texas, where a 17-year-old used his father’s rifle to murder 10 people and injure 13 more.
As a [parent/concerned resident/member of group] in the [School District/Independent School], I am asking that you prioritize regular communication to parents and guardians about the importance of secure storage of firearms in compliance with HB 3. Doctors, parents, educators, and more overwhelmingly support this effort.
The Texas School Safety Center has already distributed safe firearm storage information to hundreds of school districts across the state.
This should not be controversial. In total, two-thirds of parents are worried about a shooting in their children’s school, and more than three-quarters of Americans agree that gun owners should be required to lock up their guns, including two-thirds of gun owners themselves. [I/we] ask for your support in spreading this message.
[I am/we are] thrilled to see that the Texas Legislature approved HB 3 during the 88th Legislative Session, ensuring that districts share this lifesaving information with parents and guardians. I look forward to hearing more about how your district is complying with this policy and your plan for continuing to educate about safe firearm storage.
Sincerely,
