Uniting Against Domestic Violence

In 2022, 216 Texans were killed in intimate partner violence and more than 70% of victims were killed with a firearm. Firearms increase the chances that an intimate partner will be murdered by 5 times. Loopholes in federal and state law leave guns in the hands of abusive partners and stalkers, often with deadly results.

The stakes for protecting domestic violence victims have never been higher. The Supreme Court will soon hear the United States v. Rahimi case. If the Court allows the 5th Circuit decision to stand, the outcome would be extremely dangerous — particularly for domestic violence victims and survivors, children, and our broader community.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The intersection of gun violence and domestic violence is a critical issue, and it’s why we’re committed to keeping firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers. Take our pledge to join us in demanding gun safety for all.

Join us November 8th – Sponsorship opportunities available!

Join us this November to thank advocates and invest in a future free from gun violence.

TCFV joins us as members of the Texas Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence and as advocates for survivors and prevention of family violence in Texas. They are key partners in our fight for safer communities in our state. We join them in calling on communities, courts, and lawmakers to consider, discuss, and craft protocols around firearm transfers when a court issues an order prohibiting possession from a violent perpetrator.

Check out TCFV’s recent publications in this area, including their 88th Legislative Update, Honoring Texas Victims (the Texas intimate partner fatality report for 2022), and their 2022 Statewide Report on Domestic Violence High Risk Teams, which focuses on homicide prevention.

NEW! Youth Advocacy Toolkit

We are excited to announce the launch of our Youth Advocacy Toolkit! It is designed to provide young Texans under the age of 18 with the tools and information required to be effective gun violence prevention advocates.

Living as a young person in Texas comes with the reality of living with the gun violence crisis that is plaguing our state. At Texas Gun Sense, we aim to empower young people through education. To learn more about how young people can fight for school safety, watch our recent panel featuring student and educational advocates.

Take Action – Support Background Checks

We need you to submit a comment to support a crucial rule change that would bring us closer to having federal background checks on all gun sales, a measure that 86% of Texas voters support.

In the absence of bipartisan congressional action, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms has proposed a rule change to clarify the definition of who is “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. This definition will ensure that individuals selling firearms for profit will have to be licensed and conduct background checks on their buyers.

The ATF has already received more than 58,000 comments – largely from the gun lobby and their extremist supporters who don’t support background checks on gun sales.

Please go to our website to see how to take action now.
