Our story

Texas Gun Sense began in 2007 as Students for Gun-Free Schools in Texas, founded by survivors of the Virginia Tech shooting along with families, friends, and supporters committed to safer campuses. The early movement brought together students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members united around one goal: preventing gun violence in schools.

In 2013, with growing support and a broader mission, we became Texas Gun Sense—a statewide nonprofit working to make Texas safer for everyone. Two years later, we launched the Texas Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, an intersectional network working to advance impact across the state.

Today, we also co-lead the Texas Invest in Us Coalition with Community Justice Action Fund, helping secure investments in community violence intervention programs across Texas.
