Texas Lawmakers Fail to Protect their Constituents

Austin, TXThis week, the Texas Legislature approved SB 1596 legalizing short-barrel firearms and SB 1362 prohibiting Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) in Texas and seeking to punish entities who enforce out-of-state ERPOs.

Lawmakers once again dismissed policies like secure firearm storage and raising the age to purchase semi-automatic rifles, even in the face of overwhelming public support and pleas from communities impacted by gun tragedies.

“The 89th Legislative Session tested our collective resolve, but it also underscored the strength, strategy, and solidarity of the gun violence prevention movement in Texas,” said Nicole Golden, Executive Director of Texas Gun Sense. “Our coalition blocked several harmful bills, including ones that would have lowered the age to carry handguns and allowed firearms in schools and hospitals. We will continue our work defeating dangerous legislation and holding our leaders accountable for eroding public safety by the passage of SB 1362 and SB 1596.”

In the two years until the next legislative session, Texas Gun Sense will continue to do the groundwork, mobilize passionate Texans, and pressure lawmakers to stand up for their constituents’ safety, rather than the interests of the gun lobby.
